Series Statement:
‘La Éphè-Mer’ depicts the ever-changing life of the seemingly sterile Dún Laoghaire Baths in Dublin, Ireland. The seaside Baths were recently refurbished by A2 architects and architects from the local county council after being in a derelict state since their closure in 1997. Prior to this, the Baths had been a paramount social hub for Dublin since its opening for public use in the 1890’s.
Despite their statutory structure, the Baths’ seaside location gives them an ecosystem of shadows thanks to a cocktail of factors such as sunlight, seawater and the state-shifting Béton Brut they’re made of. Light hits the Baths at various angles in a sculptural manner, waves crash against the layered mass - allowing for a myriad of muted monochrome patterns. The seawater dries from the surfaces; mirroring the concrete’s formation process with its innate liquid-to-solid shift of state. It is an ephemeral place, standing still and strong.
